Hot Track of the Week: "By Your Side" by The 1975

Be sure to check out The 1975’s cover of “By Your Side” by Sade. As someone who grew up both loving the original version of the song by Sade and was an avid fan of The 1975 for several years, to say I was excited when I heard that the band had released a cover was an understatement. Upon actually listening to the song, my excitement only increased. While I loved the soulful, early 2000s vibe of the original song, the modern, jazz-like twist that The 1975 brought to the song certainly amplified the song’s beauty.

In The 1975’s version, Matty Healy’s vocals create a beautiful serenade, while the slight distortion of his vocals add the modern edge that the original version lacks. Additionally, the use of the saxophone throughout the song added a jazzy vibe, which increases the romantic aura that is present throughout the song.

As several of The 1975’s songs are relatively fast-paced pop songs that are ideal for dancing along, the band’s ability to produce an emotive ballad, along with the vocal abilities of Matty Healy, are underrated. However, this cover of “By Your Side” displays how such a ballad can be one of the best works of the band.

By both bringing listeners back to the early 2000s and making them feel temporarily in love with Healy’s emotionally evocative vocals, “By Your Side” surely stands as Campus Vinyl’s Hot Track of the Week.
