Campus Vinyl's October Playlist

image-copy.png

Now that you're all on break, it's finally time to relax after this long week of midterms and papers. Whether you're raging with your home friends or curled up on the couch with your basic coffee cup of pumpkin spice, Campus Vinyl collaborated on a playlist for the first real month of fall. Expect a diverse selection reflecting the very diverse tastes and interests of our staff members. Tell us what you think of this October playlist!

For October, Gigi Joudrie throws it back a little with The White Stripes’ “We’re Going To Be Friends”.

Not only is this song literally about fall, but it relates to a common situation which generally occurs a month or so after classes begin. You find that one person exactly like you in whichever class and bond over J-Crew vests, pumpkin-flavoured-everythings and that midterm you forgot to study for. Also, who doesn’t love The White Stripes?

Zac Westdyke is dancing to "Heroes (we could be)" by  Alesso ft. Tove Lo.

This song was released a few weeks ago and I immediately had it on repeat.  Alesso continues to impress me with his Progressive House sound, and Tove Lo kills it on vocals (as is expected).

Staci Dubow is listening to "Georgia" by Vance Joy on repeat this month!

I was so excited when Vance Joy came out with his new album, and he did not disappoint!  Georgia’s been on repeat since it came out.  Its soft instrumentals and Vance Joy's beautiful vocals make it the perfect song to chill out to.

Tom Bonan is listening to "Sweet Thing" by Van Morrison.

I have been listening to Astral Weeks, Morrison's sophomore album, all summer. "Sweet Thing" is a great example of the unique folk-rock sound that he developed on the album.

Connor Small is reminiscing with "Wheels" by Foo Fighters.

I used to listen to this song all the time in high school, and I always associate with autumn. I recently rediscovered it in my iTunes library and have been listening to it non-stop.

Jen Lassen is into"Little Numbers" by BOY.

I Shazamed this song at a concert over the summer (it was part of the in-between-acts playlist) and fell in love with the sound of this duo, BOY. This upbeat song is the perfect energy boost on a chilly October day, when all you wanna do is stay cuddled up inside!

Morgan Klein is loving "Run Wild" by King & Country, featuring Andy Mineo.

This song is so perfect for walking home late at night from the library.  I'm so into this apocalyptic, grungy style of music that I can't not love this song!  I love how this song goes through stages, starting with the slow, soft tone which completely evolves with the addition of some strong drums and an awesome electric guitar which then, unexpectedly, turns into a short rap section finishing the way it started.

Ian Colley is getting jazzy with "Autumn Leaves" by Joseph Kosma, as performed by Miles Davis.

Because my song choices can only be inspired by the season.  But really, this classic French chanson-turned-jazz standard does have an infectious albeit tragic melody.  I've included the Miles Davis version (the melody starts about 1 minute in) so you can put it on for 10 minutes straight but there are dozens of interpretations out there.

Justin Westdyke chilling out with Hail the Sun's "Relax/Divide".

Hail the Sun released a new album this past month, and it absolutely rocks. Their music went in such an awesome direction with lots of great resonances with their previous release. One of the more mellow tracks off the album, "Relax/Divide," is an incredible piece of work that's super chill yet vulnerable enough to maintain that post-hardcore vibe that they totally own.

Avid Khorramian is transitioning into fall with "Apartment (In The Open)" by Young the Giant.

I love Young the Giant and I love the fall, so why not? This song is by no means new or unknown, I know. There’s just something about their raw “In The Open” sessions, especially for “Apartment”, that seems to nicely complement the transition over to colder weather.

Jake Perlmutter can't get enough of  "Left Hand Free" by Alt-J.

The first single off of their latest album This Is All Yours showcases their bluesy-rock Black Keys influence while maintaining their personal indie-electronic twang. This is and will be an indie-rock anthem.

Jason Hammett can't get enough of this party song: "Doses & Mimosas" by Cherub

Since I am assuming Shake It Off is already taken, I choose Doses and Mimosas by Cherub. This best word to describe this song is fun. I love the hook on this song. It is a perfect party song as well as a general mood booster.

Louise Peterson digs “Pharoahs” by SBTRKT featuring Roses Gabor.

Ever since Asha introduced me to SBTRKT, I can't get enough. Take a listen, then tell me this: how can you NOT dance to this song?!

Morgan Beams is pumped up by " The Days" by Avicii.

This is a new must add to any pump up playlist ya have going. Whether it's for hitting the gym or the bar (or just to get ya in a dancing mood) it's definitely a great go-to. Check it out!

Brianna Marshall is pre-gaming with "Stolen Dance" by Milky Chance.

I found this song randomly through an 8tracks playlist and it really stands out to me as a unique mix of indie and party music. It's becoming a favorite pre-game song among my friends and I and I could definitely see it getting big on campus.

Marcus Schenck warming up with "Emmylou" by First Aid Kit.

Now that fall is officially here, it's time for a nice intimate track like "Emmylou" to warm us up as the winds get a bit colder. The voices of First Aid Kit are so clean and honest and the track is a sincere testament to the keep the joy of summer just a bit longer.

Adam Kozdrowicz having some fun with "24k of Gold" by Big Sean featuring J. Cole.

Big Sean and J. Cole dream about having it all one day, and who can blame them? Sometimes it's just fun to relax and imagine what it would be like to make it big one day.

Joe Tull thinks "Long October" by Handguns is glorious.

Handguns, a pop-punk band from Harrisburg, PA, released this song on their album "Angst" in September of 2012. "Long October" is fast and aggressive and has a battle-cry feel, which makes it perfect for fighting through midterms until your much needed fall break arrives! Also, you should have seen how many fans tweeted "AND IT'S GONNA BE A LONG OCTOBER!" at the band on October 1st; it was glorious.
