Darius Rucker and Eli Young Band Become Concert Favorites
Darius Rucker and Eli Young Band rocked campus on Friday as the Concert Committee’s Spring Concert performers. Corey Smith opened, kicking off a high energy country show. The crowd was a mix of Bucknell students and Lewisburg locals, making the concert a community event as opposed to the closed atmosphere of previous campus concerts. I am personally not a country music fan so I did not know what to expect from the performance. I planned to wait it out until Darius Rucker inevitably closed with a “Wagon Wheel” cover, one of the few country songs I know. I went to the concert with some country music diehard friends so I tried to blend in and fake recognition for the set list. This was not as difficult as I expected and I definitely found myself enjoying the show. The Spring Concert proved to be a fun time for country fans and country newbies too. Eli Young Band was definitely a standout performer of the night with fun audience interaction and the classic references to college drinking and partying. “Drunk Last Night” was introduced by lead singer, Mike Eli, who shared his own love for late nights during his college years. Eli Young Band definitely had a relatable vibe and seemed comfortable performing for a college campus. Mike Eli reappeared later in the night wearing a Bucknell sweatshirt and hat as he joined Darius Rucker on stage to perform a cover of the country classic “Family Tradition”. I really enjoyed Eli Young Band and they definitely complimented Darius Rucker’s headlining performance.
The True Believers star utilized staging and lighting effects to bring the full Darius Rucker experience to Lewisburg, PA. Darius Rucker performed new music off his latest album while intermixing old Hootie and the Blowfish classics like “Only Wanna Be With You”. Because of the span of years and genres within his musical career, Darius Rucker was a relevant performer for the varying audience members. He was able to keep the Eli Young Band party theme going for the Bucknell students yet slowed it down for “It Won’t Be Like This For Long”, a heartfelt song about his daughter growing up that appealed to the local Lewisburg residents in attendance. He closed the song as I predicted with a cover of “Wagon Wheel” which became a full audience sing-along. The Super Saturday classic was definitely a highlight of the concert, rounding out a great show.
Darius Rucker and Eli Young Band brought a new musical taste to campus and in my opinion it was the best concert that I have seen at Bucknell. Even though country is not really my thing, I was able to appreciate the energy and talent of the performances. The Concert Committee did a great job and pulled of an extremely successful concert. Based on the Spring Concert, I can’t wait for another great performer on campus next school year.
