Daughter: Artist on the Rise

With multiple EPs and an early 2013 album release, English-based Daughter is on the rise.  After opening for Ben Howard on his 2012 tour, Daughter’s popularity skyrocketed, leading to opening act gigs on The National’s 2014 North American tour.  The indie folk rock trio is also set to play 2014 Coachella weekends from April 11th to 13th and April 18th to 20th. “Medicine”, a hauntingly passionate vocal performance by lead singer Elena Tonra, reflects on themes of loss and failure and exposes the raw emotion that defines the band’s music.  This single from the 2011 EP, The Wild Youth, foreshadows the band’s 2013 release, If You Leave, a well-crafted lyrical folk album.  “Youth” shines as an anthem of careless irresponsibility and the underlying struggles of love and relationships.  Tonra’s voice falters as she sings, “And if you're in love, then you are the lucky one,/'Cause most of us are bitter over someone.”  Daughter produces music with relatable depth, reflecting the confusion of life as a 20-something-year-old.

Beyond the talented writing of Elena Tonra and guitarist, Igor Haefeli, Daughter sparked attention from the pop music world with a brilliant cover of “Get Lucky” originally performed by Daft Punk featuring Pharrell.  The vocals are deep and breathy and the stripped down arrangement features simple percussion accompaniment courtesy of the band’s drummer, Remi Aguilella.  The versatility of the band resulted in mass appeal yet the folk styling maintains their indie identity.

While Daughter has found a niche within the indie folk genre, 2014 is their year to define themselves.  Previous live performances have directly contributed to the rise of this London group and continued appearances on the music scene will only further their success. These talented musicians have a lot to offer through poetic lyrics and mellow instrumental sounds that should put them on the radar for indie music fans.
