Hot Track of the Week: “Love on the Brain” by Rihanna

On January 28th, Barbadian pop-princess Rihanna dropped her highly anticipated eighth studio album, Anti, through Jay-Z’s streaming service Tidal and for purchase on iTunes. Now, about two weeks later, the full-length album is finally available on other platforms including Spotify and Apple Music. The album demonstrates a very clear directional move in terms of the songstress’s music. It’s less pop and less hip-hop, taking considerable influence from western music and converting it into a modern sound. Such transformation is discernable in tracks like “Desperado” and “Never Ending.” Of course, there remain bonafide bangers like “Work” featuring Drake and “Consideration” featuring SZA. One of the most interesting tracks, however, is “Love on the Brain,” which sounds like a 1950’s Doo-wop tune that could very well play from your local jukebox. It shows an impressive amount of Rihanna’s vocal range, infusing the trade soul and roughness of her voice into each note. It is unlike anything we’ve heard from the vocalist in the past, clearly demonstrating her evolution as an artist and performer. It’s a song to be enjoyed with a loved one or just alone while enjoying a long drive. Take a listen below:
