Hot Track of the Week: “Evil Eye” by KT Tunstall

At an age when most of my musical favorites came from Radio Disney (let me clarify that this age was nine), I was pretty quick to protest when my parents grew tired of listening to the High School Musical soundtrack and wanted to switch up the music in the car. By some miracle, everyone liked KT Tunstall, so she became my family’s go-to when the kiddy tunes became too much.

I knew that there was something special about “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” – which after ten whole years in my iTunes library, has yet to get old – even as a pre-teen, and I’ve been an avid fan of hers ever since.

Her last full-length album, 2013’s Invisible Empire // Crescent Moon, saw Tunstall take a softer approach to folk-rock. But with the release of her latest EP, Golden State, the Scottish singer-songwriter seems to be back to her old ways and punchy, energetic tunes.

New track “Evil Eye” has pretty much all the elements that make KT’s music great: a driving bass line, a catchy chorus, and a few well-placed harmonies. The highlight of the song is the bridge, when Tunstall sings, “you’re the poster boy for falling in love with yourself”: the perfect diss for that narcissistic ‘special someone’ in your life.

The studio recording is currently only available in full on Spotify, but Tunstall has promised a music video. For now, check out this live recording from her performance at The Bardot in Hollywood:
