During Spring Break, my dad asked me if I knew the song “Happy,” by Pharrell.  I said “yes”, and then proceeded to ask if he liked it, he said, “How can I not?” “Happy” by Pharrell Williams is Campus Vinyl’s hot track of the week.  The song was first released in the movie Despicable Me 2 in 2013.  Since the movie, the song had catapulted its way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 where it now stands at the #1 spot.  “Happy” is quite different from many of the other Hot 100 songs as it is not oriented for a club scene, rather it attracts the feel good listeners, maybe like my dad.

In tribute to Pharrell and his musical talents, I think that is it important to note that Pharrell won Producer Of The Year at the Grammy Awards in 2014.  “Happy” is not the only song to send this artist into stardom this past year, as he is well known for his performances in “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke and “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk. Pharrell produced the “Blurred Lines” which we all know to be an international hit, reaching the #1 spot in 13 countries.

In terms of Pharrell Williams’s career, this is just a little blip in the long story.  Pharrell has been a part of various musical groups, including The Neptunes and N.E.R.D.  All along the way, Pharrell has been perfecting his production talents by working with fantastic musicians with the Gorillaz, Lupe Fiasco, and many more.

It seems that “Happy” is just the next piece to Pharrell’s recent run at mainstream musical domination.  It is because of this song’s recent popularity, and not to mention that I personally enjoy the song, that Campus Vinyl has chosen “Happy” by Pharrell Williams as the Hot Track of the Week.
