Journalist of the Week: Avid Khorramian

Curious as to who's behind the Campus Vinyl BucknellU's Instagram? Or the woman behind our Facebook and Twitter handles? Well, it's no longer a mystery: it's the queen of cool and social media expert, Avid Khorramian. I've decided to name Avid as Journalist of the Week for her incredible aptitude for digital media. She's transformed our social media pages and designed an incredible new logo for us. We are in awe of her talents, time management skills, and music tastes. Read a little bit more about her below: If your life had a soundtrack and you could only pick two musicians/bands to play every track, who would they be and why?

I’d probably have to go with Alex Turner (both solo and as a part of Arctic Monkeys) and Kanye West.

Alex Turner’s solo work, particularly in his first EP for the soundtrack of the film Submarine, is the soundtrack to the vast majority of the dismal things I do routinely--i.e. walking to class in terrible weather, getting out of bed, eating a bland lunch, and really anything I do in the morning. At the same time, Alex Turner’s work as a part of Arctic Monkeys would pretty accurately encompass the remotely energetic, more neutral moments in my routine.

I also feel like Kanye’s a given. Even if he’s slowly going off the deep end and losing the true essence of art in his music, I would need some classic Kanye angst in the mix. While Alex Turner covers sadness/neutral moments, Kanye could pretty nicely represent irritated and cheerful instants. Also, “Street Lights” is my favorite song to drive to at night, which I’m actually able to do back home, so there’s that too.

If you could change/improve one thing about Bucknell’s music scene, what would it be?

We need more live music. I don’t mean we need to somehow increase our budget twofold and get two extremely popular artists to make the trek over the Lewisburg each year. I’d choose ten smaller artists over Katy Perry and Bruno Mars any day. I’m thinking more along the lines of continuing to have live music at Super Saturdays—that should turn into something that is a given and more on-campus and nearby artists should get involved. We should have kickbacks on Thursday nights where a band or individual plugs into their amps and tests out a new song on a large group of friends and friends of friends. I genuinely believe that the more casual live music becomes on campus, the stronger the music scene will be.

What genre, artist, or group do you listen to when you need a good stress relief?

I tend to listen to the soundtrack from Submarine when I’m pitying myself, The White Stripes when I’m pissed at the world, and the soundtrack from the film Amelie when I need to refocus/while I’m doing work. Specifically “It’s Hard To Get Around The Wind” by Alex Turner from the Submarine soundtrack, “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes, and “Comptine d’un autre été, l’près-midi” by Yann Tiersen from the Amelie soundtrack.

What’s the best concert you have ever been to?

Am I allowed to say Coachella? If so, Coachella. My best friend and I really worked to ensure we’d make the most out of the festival. That essentially involved eating one meal all weekend, standing at stages for eight hours at a time to make sure we would be front row for our favorite sets, then spending our nights in a tent on the campgrounds so we didn’t miss a thing. It was all worth it, though. Seeing Alt-J, Jake Bugg, Grizzly Bear, Franz Ferdinand, Vampire Weekend, and The Lumineers while pushed up against the barrier was incredible, and making a few cameos on Coachella Live wasn’t too bad either.
