Justin Timberlake: The Return of JT

Remember when that *NSYNC CD was spinning furiously in all of our walkmen, and Britney and Justin were still Hollywood’s sweethearts? Those days may be over, with Britney having a family, and Justin having transitioned to the Silver Screen, but JT still never fails to bring sexy back. He did just that two weeks ago with his performance of his new song, “Suit & Tie,” alongside the one and only, Mr. Carter, also known as Jay-Z. Rumors of Justin’s return to music had been circling for months, and they culminated in an explosion of ritzy, old-school glamour, with JT channeling his inner Frank Sinatra by wearing a tux, and using vintage microphones and a sepia filter for the television broadcast.

Jay-Z, of course, brought the same powerful swagger, authenticity, and fearlessness he always brings. The performance worked mainly because of the unique dynamic between modern and vintage styles. While they went all out with the old-fashioned performance design and broadcast, the instrumentals, including a cinematic harp, finger-snap percussion and a bright brass section, were of classic vintage style. Justin’s voice and lyrics are equally as suave – he maintains the same confident falsettos from his past while the words inspire anyone to move to the dance floor. Jay-Z’s rap revives the song's modern feel – the hip-hop flavor of his performance brings us back to the present, but his references to timeless luxuries, designer brands, and indulgent foods re-illustrate the fantasy.

This isn’t all, though – Justin and Jay-Z have announced a “Legends of the Summer Stadium Tour” for the upcoming summer. The show is accurately titled: the two artists have established their names in their entertainment industry, respectively withstanding the test of time, and the venues are equally as classic:
