The Low-Down on Riding Music: Your Spring Snowboarding Playlist

yes-headphones.jpg

If possible, I would have music playing at just about every moment of my life.  Next time you’re watching a movie, pay careful attention to the soundtrack, and try to imagine how different each scene would feel if there was no music in the background.  Moral of the story: music makes things better.

Hence the reason I am taking the time right now to compile some perfect songs to accent my absolute favorite hobby: snowboarding (don’t worry, I still have mad respect for any skiers out there).  I just spent my Spring Break up in Jay, Vermont, shredding the two feet of fresh powder they just got this past Wednesday.  However, with wind chills in the negative twenties, I had to have a killer playlist to keep my fingers from falling off.  I’ll break it down by the different conditions and terrain we’ve all come to love and hate.

For when you’re catching first tracks off the tram on a powder day:

Start off with some Savant; it’s got a video game-type feel and will shake off that hangover and get you up to speed right out of the gate.

Or, if you’re feeling pretty chilled out, this might be more your vibes.

Finally, if you’re really trying to push yourself.  (This one always pumps me up and convinces me to try things that I probably shouldn’t).

For riding in general:

Modest Mouse is always a chill throwback.

Then there’s always Branchez if you’re into chill/lovetrap.

This lesser known mashup is a new favorite of mine, and just recently found its way onto my boarding playlist.

And New Politics makes it on here because this song is just a feel-good masterpiece.

Of course, this is an entirely incomplete list.  My actual snowboarding playlist is like 200 songs, but that would be way too long to talk through.  At any rate, these are a few of my favorites right now, depending on the conditions of the mountain and what kind of terrain I’m riding on (park, powder, glades, etc.)  In general, the key to awesome riding music is something that matches the weather, the type of snow you’re riding in, who you’re with, and how you’re feeling (excited, daring, chill, etc.).  If you can find a song that appeals to each of those, then you’re golden.  Hopefully the lack of snow on the ground at the Buck doesn’t mean the end of your season just yet (Big Boulder does $15 Wednesday nights, a.k.a. the perfect pregame).  If you can think of something I missed that just HAS to be on your own playlist, let me know – I’m always down for sharing shredding jams!

Ride fast, take risks, and play it loud,

Zac
