One Direction Ripping off New Found Glory?

Let it be known that I’m not a fan of all the boy bands sweeping the nation and essentially destroying the music industry, not even in the slightest. I don’t care if it’s One Direction, Justin Bieber, 5 Seconds of Summer, or even the Jonas Brothers, they all sound the same and their music just isn’t something that’s going to ‘last’. All these bands release a few catchy songs, can’t handle the fame, and spiral downwards until they essentially fall of the Earth. I wish younger generations would stop eating up all the auto tuned, generic crap that’s on the radio nowadays and explore some of the music of the early 2000s and late 90s, but hey, that’s probably asking for too much. Anyways, I usually don’t voice my fervent distaste for boy bands for the sake of saving myself an argument with some crazed fan, but when I caught word that One Direction ripped off pop punk powerhouse New Found Glory, I was far from pleased. To elaborate, One Direction recently released a song, “Steal My Girl”, that sounds eerily like New Found Glory’s tune, “It’s Not Your Fault”. Take a listen to each of the songs individually and after that there’s a video that actually plays the intro of both songs at the same time to show just how similar they actually are.

Even if you’re not a huge pop punk fan, you’ve more than likely jammed out to one of NFG’s killer songs whether it be “Radiosurgery” or “All Downhill from Here”. Therefore, I don’t get why One Direction, would pick such a distinguished group to essentially plagiarize. I mean, if you’re going to choose someone to rip off, you might as well pick someone that nobody has heard of before.

It’s obvious after just listening to the first minute of each song, let alone in their entirety that the songs are essentially identical. The introductions, as proven in the third video, are carbon copies of one another and the general progression of each song is the same. You’d think with people essentially writing and producing their songs for them, One Direction would be able to generate some fresh, innovative songs, but clearly not. It’s honestly sad that despite all their fame and resources, they have to plagiarize another group’s music. This incident really just perpetuates my distaste for boy bands and goes to show the lasting legacy that New Found Glory and other pop punk bands have created.

I guess just to throw a bone into this situation, various sources, including and claim that BOTH these songs sound like Journey’s “Faithfully.

Anyways, take a listen to all these songs and let me know what you think about this whole debacle.
