The band believes that the album will be a step in a new direction; lead singer Adam Lazzara says that it has an “Americana” influence, and it takes inspiration from musicians such as Tom Petty and Bryan Adams, according to Alternative Press.

According to guitarist John Nolan, “We’re all extremely excited about what we’ve done. It’s the culmination of things we’ve tried over the past two records. I think it’s the strongest record we’ve done since getting back together. We’ve freed ourselves up to go in new directions.”

What’s particularly impressive about the band is their ability to get past the nostalgia for the emo days of their early career, including their highly influential albums Tell All Your Friends (2002) and Where You Want to Be (2004). While many bands never seem to have much luck moving on after becoming known for a certain style, Taking Back Sunday continues to evolve and progress with each new record, and that will likely hold true for Tidal Wave as well.

Taking Back Sunday is currently on Rockstar Energy Drink’s Taste of Chaos Tour with Dashboard Confessional, Saosin, the Early November, and several others. The band has been performing the new single live on the tour in anticipation of the new record.
