#TBT Throwback Songs from 2007

It’s strange to think that it’s 2017 now, but it may be even stranger to think that 2007 was ten years ago! It seems like yesterday, until you realize that in 2007, Jordin Sparks won Season 6 of American Idol, LeBron James played for the Cleveland Cavaliers (before leaving and then returning), and George W. Bush was still the President of the United States.

While that sinks in, let’s remember these ten songs from 2007 that seem like they were released just the other day.

“Beautiful Girls” by Sean Kingston

Remember Sean Kingston? “Beautiful Girls” dominated airwaves in 2007, eventually rising to the top of the charts and staying stuck in our heads for a long time afterwards.

“Love Song” by Sara Bareilles

I’ve always loved the piano riff in this song, as well as the irony of the lyrics “I’m not gonna write you a love song” in a song titled, “Love Song”. Bareilles’ hit may have escaped you over the years, but listening to this will take you back to the simpler days of 2007.

“Crank That (Soulja Boy)” by Soulja Boy Tell’em

Knowing the dance to “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” was the coolest thing in 2007. Hopping to the side, arms extended, while shouting “You!” was all the rage back in the day. Also, the start of the music video may be the most hilarious thing you see all day.

“Bubbly” by Colbie Caillat

As the polar opposite of the previous song, “Bubbly” was one of the best ballads of the year. It’s a relaxing song to listen to -- the perfect soundtrack for pensively staring out your dorm window.

“Girlfriend” by Avril Lavigne

“Girlfriend” is a perfect mix of punk rock and catchy lyrics. You may not know all the words anymore, but you definitely remember rocking out, singing “Hey, Hey, you, you, I don’t like your girlfriend!”.

“Stronger” by Kanye West

Classic Kanye song, with a funny Bucknell connection if you didn’t know already. Check out why we “should be honored by [Kanye’s] lateness."

“Teardrops on My Guitar” by Taylor Swift

Before “Bad Blood”, “Shake it Off”, and even “You Belong With Me” or “Love Story”, there was “Teardrops on My Guitar”. This was one of Swift’s breakthrough tracks -- and it proved to be just the first of many great songs to come.

“Umbrella” by Rihanna ft. Jay Z

In picking a Rihanna song for this countdown, “Umbrella” was in tough competition, as she also released “Shut Up and Drive” and “Don’t Stop the Music” in 2007. It’s been ten years, but I still think it’s funny when Rihanna sings, “‘ella, ‘ella”.

“Wait for You” by Elliott Yamin

After mentioning Jordin Sparks earlier, I knew I had to include an American Idol artist on this playlist. Yamin finished third on Season 5 of American Idol in 2006 and released this track in 2007. He may be overshadowed now by competitor Chris Daughtry’s success (who finished fourth on the same season of Idol- if you can’t tell by now, I really used to love this show), but Yamin’s “Wait for You” dominated both the radio and my iPod ten years ago.

“Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin’)” by T-Pain ft. Yung Joc

One of T-Pain’s biggest hits, with a catchy melody that -- like so many other songs on this playlist -- was stuck in my head for much of the year.

Although it’s been a decade since these songs were released, it truly feels like yesterday when you listen to them, and who doesn’t like a classic 2000’s jam?
