Travis Scott Strides into 2016 with Two New Tracks
2015 marked Houston-based rapper Travis Scott’s breakout year. At only 23 years young, he has successfully released his first full-length album, Rodeo, which received largely positive reviews, and starred opposite Rihanna in the Fenty x Puma sneaker campaign. On December 31st the artist released two new tracks, perhaps to commemorate the triumphant year he’s had and to prepare fans for his New Years Eve performance alongside The Chainsmokers in New York City. The first track, “Wonderful,” features Scott’s “Madness” tourmate The Weeknd. It was also produced by T-Minus and Boi-1da. The second, “A-Team” is a solo track, but features instrumentals and production by Allen Ritter. Both were released via Soundcloud along with the following statement: “My end of the year choices was spent on the kids.
Part hood, part poetic, Travis embodies a young yung Future with major Toni Morrison meets NWA vibes. Both “Wonderful” and “A-Team” signify a strong stride into the New Year for Scott, each delivering a taste of his signature sound. The former is a guaranteed hit, with over 5.4 million hits on Soundcloud already. Its infectiously whimsical beat flows seamlessly against Scott’s very quotable lyrics:
“Oh my, oh my, what a wonderful time Been a minute since I pulled up outside Shut it down yeah you do that every time Ooh-wee had a feeling you might.”
While some of the comments on Soundcloud complain of Scott’s incessant use of autotune, it’s only expected with an artist like Scott who is likely following in the footsteps of many his contemporaries, including Kanye West and Yung Thug. While Scott raps about the fruits of his labor, The Weeknd seductively serenades us all about the wonders of women and drugs – what else would we expect from the XO King?
“A-Team” opens with a soulful trumpet solo that translates into a smooth, sexy beat throughout the rest of the song. While it lacks the same number of plays as “Wonderful,” it successfully demonstrates the musical prowess of the young Houston rapper and his production team. It’s clean, it’s brief, it’s lit.
