Weekly Event Breakdown: Week of 4/21/2013

Still alive, Bucknell? We’ve got one more full week of classes left, and for most of us we are in the eye of the hurricane that is preparing for finals week. Enjoy this last breath of fresh air before the onslaught of finals hits, because we’ve finally hit that point in the semester where we can no longer justify a bad test grade with “I’ll do better on the next exam.” That being said, this week’s Weekly Event Breakdown is going to be tailored towards exciting events that’ll give you a great way to take a study break amidst all the work! Fortunately, there are a ton of awesome events happening this week here at Bucknell, at least one is sure to appeal to your taste. First off, this coming Tuesday, April 23rdNikolay Khozyainov will be performing in Natalie Davis Rooke Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. before his performance at Carnegie Hall. For those of you not familiar with Khozyainov (which is a good number of you, I’d assume), he is definitely a musician you should start to get to know. At only 21 years old, Khozyainov is the most recent winner of the Dublin International Piano Competition, and has a style of performing that is unlike most other classically-trained pianists of today. As demonstrated in the video below, Khozyainov works his way across the keys masterfully with a grace that is both deliberate yet full of play. Needless to say, this incredible young pianist is a performance you will NOT want to miss- this “kid” is only going to bigger and bigger places from here on out.

Next up is a spring concert unlike the one we saw two weeks ago with Third Eye Blind! I’m talking about theBucknell Gamelan Ensemble’s spring concert, this Thursday, April 25th at 7:30 p.m. at Natalie Davis Rooke Recital Hall in the Sigfried Weis Music Building. Now, unless you’re an avid Bucknell musician or music major, you might be thinking to yourself “What the hell is the Gamelan Ensemble?” Not to worry- for complete coverage of the ensemble you can go check out their group profile, or check out this week’s Event of the Week article on their upcoming performance! In short, the Gamelan Ensemble is an inclusive range of students, faculty, and community members who perform a diverse mix of Indonesian musical styles with various unique (and totally awesome) instruments. Check below for some clips of previous years’ performances here at Bucknell!

Looking for activities to culminate your last full week here at Bucknell? Of course, there’s Chrysalis Ball, thisFriday, April 26th at 10:00 p.m. where Doug Bogan and Pat Benatar will be performing. Tickets are on sale at the CAP Center in the ELC Ground Floor for $20. For more info on this event, check out this week’s preview coverage article!

On Saturday, April 27th, Jazz Appreciation Month continues!  Extremely accomplished saxophonist, Tia Fuller, will be performing for FREE at the Campus Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Best known for her work as the all-female band behind Beyoncé, Tia has been featured in numerous publications including Jazz Improv Magazine, thePhiladelphia Tribune, and Down Beat Magazine (among many others). Fuller’s performance this coming Saturday is sure to be both powerful and inspiring!
